Research progress on world natural heritage conservation: its buffer zones and the implications

Abstract In recent decades, World Heritage Sites (WHSs) have faced external severe threats in the context of global economisation and urbanisation. The buffer zone as a conservation layer management tool for WHSs has attracted increasing scholarly attention debate. However, there is limited understanding zones’ social ecological role Natural (WNHSs) lack summary research progress on zones. To fill this gap, study systematically reviews existing knowledge gaps zones WNHSs worldwide. We used systematic literature review framework Search, Assessment, Synthesis Analysis (SALSA) through WoS CNKI databases to obtain 188 articles that met inclusion criteria. aim was analyze temporal regional distribution publications, types studies, main processes landmark achievements, gaps, implications future research. Results indicated that: (1) an overall upward trend number reaching maximum 2020, with most published Asia Europe. process presents two categories ecologically socially oriented. (2) achievements include theoretical research, technology methods, model construction, benefit monitoring evaluation, experimental demonstration, etc. Among them, numerous (58.51%). (3) On basis, 8 key scientific issues are summarised. Reviewing summarising critical will provide practical guidance effective implementation WNH conservation, especially karst fragile environments. (4) Karst should be based effect human-land relationship promoting heritage protection. Examining institutional factors problems degraded ecosystems from socio-economic perspective. purpose seek socio-ecological system composed social, economic, cultural dimensions zone. Focus coupling between eco-industrial development strengthen communities’ adaptive collaborative management. Explore techniques methods adapted characteristics ecosystem itself, conduct demonstrations.
